GEORGE TOWN (Oct 1, 2013): The Penang government has allocated RM40,000 for the the Local Democracy Festival 2013, which begins on Saturday.

State Local Government Committee chairman Chow Kon Yeow said the three-month event organised by Suaram and supported by the state government is aimed at promoting democracy among the younger generation.

“The event will allow them to have a better understanding of local governance, ” he told reporters at a press conference today.

The festival was introduced in 2010 and served as a platform for the voice of the youth to be heard.

Project coordinator Melanie Yong said the festival, which entered its fourth year, has created an awareness of democracy among youths.

“There are plenty of activities, such as a forum on JKKK (village development and security committee) elections and an activism camp, to appeal to people from all walks of life, ” she said.

The event ends on Dec 15.
